My Living Budget

My Living Budget · Early career

Your first paycheck budget.

Start with take-home pay, cover essentials, choose a manageable savings target, and track what you spend. A useful budget changes with you.

Start my budget

Step 1

Start with the money you actually receive

Use take-home pay after taxes and payroll deductions, not the salary on your offer letter. If your hours vary, start with a conservative monthly amount and update it as you learn your pattern.

Step 2

Give the essentials a place

List rent, utilities, groceries, transportation and required debt payments. Add flexible spending you enjoy, too. Your first plan is a starting point, not a test you can fail.

Step 3

Make room for a small safety cushion

Choose a savings percentage you can sustain after covering essentials. Build your emergency fund first. If the target feels tight, adjust the plan or consider one small swap rather than cutting out everything you love.

Step 4

Log, compare and adjust

Record expenses as you go. Look at planned versus actual amounts by category, then use what you learn to shape next month. Celebrate the habit of checking in, not just a perfect total.
